I tried my best to research my question first. IMac 7.1 running 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. Have downloaded El Capitan and when I click on installer it says 'Installmacosxdmg not recognized.' I was very excited about the release of OS X El Capitan earlier this week. The OS upgrade is highly recommended as it vastly improves the performance of Macs (that are capable of running Yosemite). Check compatibility

Install the macOS installer

Double-click the downloaded file to open a window showing its contents. Then double-click the file within, named InstallMacOSX.pkg.

Follow the onscreen instructions, which will guide you through the steps necessary to install.
