OS X :: Make A Os Extended Partition On An NTFS Drive (external)?

Mar 25, 2009

so I have about 60 gigs free on my windows 320GB external. It is currently NTFS formatted. Is there a way I can allocate some of that free space to function as a mac formatted drive.I've tried googling this for a long time and all I can find is the reverse of what I want to do.my specs/capabilities:I 24 inch imac bought new this month.which is supposed to translate as: 10.5.6, 4GB of ram, 2.66GHz core 2 duo)I have the whole fuse thing working, but disk management won't give me the format option..is there a program for this? or some kind of tricky business I need to do?n

Nov 15, 2010

I am trying to Install Windows 7 on my macbook pro (mid-2009) and during the beginning of installation, it says that windows 7 cannot install on the boot camp partition because its not NTFS. So I had to cancel installation. Anyone know how to Make boot camp assistant partition in NTFS? or in any way so I can install windows 7?

OS X :: Shrinking HFS To Make NTFS Partition Bigger

Sep 8, 2009

All I want to do is simply shrink the size of my HFS+ partition and make my NTFS partition bigger. I tried CampTune but it doesn't detect my hard drive (common problem). I'm going to try iPartition soon. In Windows, resizing partitions was a snap. Doesn't seem to be that easy in OS X for some reason.
I was gonna try Disk Utility but it says that it may make my Boot Camp partition unbootable. I don't really want to take a chance. I just made my HFS+ partition smaller in boot camp, but it won't let me touch my NTFS partition. I'm thinking about going into Windows 7 and using Disk Management to extend the NTFS partition.

OS X :: Mac Snow Leopard Freezing / Slowdown (Mac Fuse / NTFS 3G & NTFS)

Jun 11, 2010

This is a thread for anyone who is experiencing a large slowdown and/or intermittent 10-60 second freezes on Mac OSX Snow Leopard, where the freezes are completely unrelated to anything you're doing, any app you're using, or whether the system is under heavy or little use. I found the issue stems from the use of Mac Fuse (with NTFS-3G installed) and/or Paragon NTFS for Mac OSX, the combination of these 2 apps essentially doing the same job (NTFS write support), conflicts and causes the hard drive to be under constant (although very little) use, which can randomly cause 30-60 second freezes. If anyone is experiencing these same freezes, uninstall either one app or the other, or both, and that might help remedy the situation. EDIT: updated because I didn't specifically mention which macFUSE plugin I had installed..

OS X :: NTFS And NTFS 3G Volume - Doesn't Wake Up After Goes To Sleep

Aug 8, 2009

I have 2 external HDDs that I am sharing with other PCs/Macs over the network. Interestingly, when I look up the info for each volume, only one shows as NTFS-3G whereas the other one shows as just NTFS. And this NTFS volume is causing so much trouble. It doesn't wake up after it goes to sleep, and when I power-cycle it, the data I have put in previously is gone! It doesn't seem to save the data properly. Perhaps because it's just NTFS, not NTFS-3G, I cannot run 'Disk Repair' from the Disk Utility app. The button is disabled whereas for other volumes, the button is enabled.
At one time, I had to connect it to a PC to run the disk repair and was able to recover some of the lost data. What the heck is going on? Howcome it is showing as NTFS opposed to NTFS-3G? Both HDDs were formatted from PCs as NTFS. Only difference is that the NTFS is 750GB one, and NTFS-3G one is just 300GB. Does NTFS-3G has size limit?

Applications :: Tuxera NTFS Vs NTFS 3G - Which Better For Normal User?

Aug 8, 2010

My Mac partition recently got corrupted to the point of needing a fresh install. I just starting installing my utilities again and downloaded the newest version of NTFS-3G. While doing this, I noticed that there was a 'professional' version of NTFS-3G sold by Tuxera (who makes NTFS-3G). I tried to find information comparing the two, but can't; Even on their own website. Does anyone know what the major differences between them are? Is worth the $31 for a normal user (meaning someone who has a BootCamp partition, but doesn't always copy to and from it)?

OS X :: NTFS Volume (BC) Not Mount Without NTFS 3G - Technical

Feb 6, 2009

I previously used NTFS-3G to write to my NTFS (Boot Camp) volume. Now, I would like to can it, and just use Apple's internal read-only NTFS stuff. But the drive refuses to mount, if I disable or remove NTFS-3G. If I try to mount it manually in Disk Utility, it just says 'The disk could not be mounted. Try running First Aid'. I tried that, and it did not work (as expected). I have tried to create an empty file with TOUCH command in the root of my NTFS drive, called 'ntfs-readonly'. I have also tried to put that file in a directory called '.NTFS-3G' in the root. According to this site, it should tell NTFS-3G to mount that drive with Apples read-only driver. But this failed to work as well - getting the same error as above, when trying to mount it manually.
An interresting thing is, that when NTFS-3G is running, the format of the NTFS drive reads 'Windows NT Filesystem (NTFS-3G)' - fine, that sounds logical. BUT. When NTFS-3G is disabled, the format reads 'MS-DOS (FAT32)'. Which, of course, is not true. Is Apples NTFS mounter broken on my system, maybe? If so, how can I fix that? I recall, that I removed NTFS-3G and Mac Fuse manually some time ago, using this site as guidance. That involved deleting the files it was using. I was very careful, but MAYBE I deleted one or more files, that Apples internal NTFS read-only driver needed.. Can somebody perhaps assist me in some way? What can I try (apart from re-installing OS X using my Time Machine backup.).?

OS X :: Format Mac OS Extended (journaled)?

Jan 19, 2011

My computer was acting slow so I ran Tech Tool. It came up with various Volume errors but they were all fixed. I noticed that this computer was formatted as Mac OS Extended but NOT Journaled like the other two in our office. I was unable to add Journaling with either Disk Utility or Tech Tool. Both cases said that 'Journaling failed' or 'unable to add journaling'. I believe I used to have journaling because I often use Onyx for repairing disk permissions and various other processes and this was the first time that I encountered the error 'Not possible to verify the start-up volume because it is not journaled'. I ran the Apple Hardware Check and the Hard drive is fine. So, after trying the previous mentioned utilities again to try and 'journal', I decided to perform an Archive & Install. I am in the process of updating the OSX software, but I noticed the HD still says Format: Mac OS Extended..Hmmmm. Can anyone shed any light on this problem?

OS X :: Can't Format To Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?

Jun 26, 2007

I've got an external HD. The first part is formatted to NTFS. The second part was formatted to FAT32. I plugged it in via Firewire and went to erase it to a journaled filesystem. It did something and left the drive unmounted. I could only format it to FAT32. Any ideas why I can't format it to journaled? I want to backup my user dir.
Edit: Tried another drive. 2 fat32 partitions. I tried to format the first and it didn't work. Formats to FAT32 well enough.

OS X :: Creating A Partition In Mac OS Extended?

Oct 5, 2009

So, I am in the process of attempting to partition my disc so that I can boot windows XP.
Know that I am in no way even a capable mac user, so I might be a bit slow.. sorry.
During the partitioning process, using boot camp, I get a message saying that I need to reformat my disc so that it is a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) disc. So, I go to my Disc Utility, and it says it already is a Mac OS extended bla bla bal. So, my question is
Why will it not let me partition, and do I really need to reformat my everthing eventhough it already is in the format it wants to be in?

Mac Pro :: Apple Care Can't Be Extended?

May 1, 2010

I just called Apple about an iPod issue. When he told me that my iPod's Apple Care expired, I gave him my Mac Pro SN, and he helped with the iPod issue as a courtesy. So while on the topic, I thought to request an extension of coverage for my Mac Pro system (about $5k worth of hardware).
He told me that Apple Care cannot be extended. 'So you just have to buy new stuff, huh?' I asked. He quietly replied, 'Yes.'
I cannot imagine having to buy $5k plus new hardware just to keep my equipment covered. Wow. Did I misunderstand him? Does anyone need some editing work done.

Hardware :: How To Get Dock On Extended Desktop

Jan 18, 2009

I just hooked up a Dell monitor to my MacBook. I will be using it in clamshell mode 98% of the time. I have the MB on the right side of the monitor. I want to drag applications back and forth between screens. Currently, I have to drag off the left side of the external. How do I drag off the right side of the external and onto the left of the MB? I don't want the MB on the left of the external on my desk. Make sense? When using both screens, how do I get the dock on my external rather than on the MB?

OS X :: Can't Format External Drive To Mac OS Extended?

Jul 8, 2009

I have the external drive formated as FAT of 1TB.
I have erasing all data whole day (about 20 hours) and formating as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) but at the end it reports an error.
Now, when I connect hard drive to my MBP it says 'disk is not readable on this computer' - Initialize..
When i try to format as Mac OS Extended (J) it says: 'Disk erase failed with error: File system formated fail'
I tried to format it on PC (Vista and XP) but they even can't see hard disk.
What should I do to get journaled formated external hard drive?

OS X :: Photoshop Files Compatable With PS Extended?

Feb 11, 2010

I have a nice opportunity to purchase low priced student Adobe Suites right now as i am enrolled in Photoshop CS4 and Illustrator CS4 classes.
Here is my concern: I would like to purchase the Masters Collection or the Design Premium. Both of these suites have Photoshop Extended. They do not have just plain old Photoshop.
Will I be confused or unable to use PS Extended if I am learning standard PS in my class?
Will the DVD of lessons for my class (including images that are to be manipulated in standard Photoshop) work with PS Extended?

OS X :: Time Machine Preparing For An Extended Period?

Jan 28, 2009

I use Firewire 800, and my external has 80GB free on it. Both it and my iMac's drives are 320GB. What's with the extended period of preparation, going on 15 minutes now, maybe longer. Backup still didn't begin, this never used to happen me before. I only backed up 2 days ago?
Also, why when I click the Time Machine menubar item to open Time Machine prefs does the DVD (iLife '09) in my optical drive make a noise as if it's being accessed? It spins up a little too. Seems very odd, and it's not a coincidence, it happens exactly when I try to open Time Machine prefs from its menubar item. I could do it 5 times in succession and the optical drive would make the same accessing noise each time, on cue

OS X :: MPlayer Extended (Rev 13) Not Working Properly On Intel?

Jan 3, 2011

I just got a new Intel Core i7 Mac and installed MPlayer OSX Extended (Rev 13) on my computer. After installing it, it needed to 'update it's font cache' and after doing this, it asked 'whether or not to check for updates automatically'. However, after I made my choice, the application unexpectedly quit. I tried doing this again several time to no avail. After resetting my computer again multiple times, and reinstalling the application, I finally got the MPlayer Rev 13 to open and play videos. Normally, when I open an application on the dock, the icon 'jumps' and then the application opens. However, whenever I open the MPlayer app, it 'jumps' and pauses and finishes the jump. Furthermore, whenever I try to go fullscreen (by clicking the screen twice), nothing happens. I have read online that there have been some cases where the borders blacken, but the video stays the same size, but in my case, nothing happens at all.

MacBook Air :: Extended Apple Care Plan?

Jan 9, 2011

Mplayer Mac

First I would like to say hello to everyone and soon I will (finally) enter the Mac world. I've been a 50-50 type of guy (Apple/Microsoft) and I had the majority of the multimedia Apple products without actual Macs though. I was tempted to buy a MacBook before but I always wanted something sleek, sexy yet with a good sauce of performance since I am not a heavy usage type of guy and for gaming I will be getting a 360 Slim later on. Finally that day has come and I will be buying the ultimate 11'. Question is, is it worth the extended Apple Care plan? I searched for answers on the official Apple site, googled up for a couple of days but I didn't find exactly what I wanted. Does it cover (for example) accidental damage? Or what are the real advantages of having an extended Apple Care plan? Since it will be my first Mac I will want to take extra care with it.
